Is WI-FI popular at your place?

Hello!

I'd like to know how WI-FI is popular and for what price. In Moscow, for example, the biggest WI-FI provider(Golgen Telecom) has three traffic plans: 1) "always", the price per month is ~21 $, 2) "round the clock", the price per 24 hours is ~4.2 $, and 3) "sometimes" the price per hour is ~2.1 $. My roommate says that WI-FI in USA is free of charge in any place. Is it true for your place?

Life for joy, world for peace.

Well, we're the UK, not USA (although we do have several USA, Canadian and other nationalities here, like most forums) and it's true that in certain 'hot spots' you can pick up an Internet connection for free if your laptop is wireless enabled.

These spots are perfectly legal.

But commonly most users will want to work from home and in the majority of cases will have to pay for the service. Prices vary according to your ISP and individual plan.

I believe it's much the same in The States, although I don't know for sure.

There are plenty people in big cities like London who (stupidly) boast of never having to pay for WiFi and piggybacking on neighbours etc.
If you've no morales then I guess you can have free wireless internet.

Which is why my Network is hard wired ;)

It is fairly easy to safeguard a wireless system against outsiders leaching off of it but some people just don't realise or know how to set up those simple measures.

I know of 2 people who have no security on their WiFi what so ever.
I've stopped telling them to safeguard their connect, they dont think any of their neighbours will abuse it!!

Well I think wired connection is still the best choice. Me and my mate always discuss this.

I think it's better for security and connectivity which is two of the most important aspects of networking for me.
I wish I could use Cat 5e cable around my house but I do not wish to run wires over the walls.

I have decided if I built a house or done one up I would put a wired network in all rooms. 2 RJ45 sockets per room for which I would get a decent switch/router.

Then along with this I hope to run fibre in each room for sound and internet connection. Both seperate of course.
I think we will begin to see fibre internet connections in the near future which will hopefully be the time I will get my own place.

First of all, thanks a lot to all.

It is not a best habit, but I like to discuss what I do not know. At my previous work place, there were peoples with overloaded work tables. Sometimes somebody needed a scanner. In that case a WiFi-connected scanner would be a usefull thing. But hardware specialists in my vicinity said that only the printer can be WiFi-connected.

IF you live next door to me it would be free! I have no security on my wireless router, i live in the middle of nowhere and have no leechers so all is good!
