I've previously used Powerquest Drive Image 5 to back up (or move between
disks) images of my C: drive partition. Despite the age of this version, its
worked flawlessly with Windows XP, and even recognises the on-board RAID
controller on my motherboard and backs up XP to a RAID 1 array on my PC. Just
to be clear, I've been booting from the Drive Image CD-ROM - which runs its
own version of DOS and executes the program from there (so I've never needed
to install it into Windows itself).
However, it doesn't work on the old hard disks I'm using as Vista test beds.
I've installed the 32 bit and 64 bit versions on seperate old disks, deleting
the old partitions and formatting each one from the appropriate Vista DVD.
Vista installed OK, and is running without any file errors - so I believe
that each install went OK. However, Drive Image reports errors when it checks
the drives, offer to "correct" them (and when I allowed it to do this once
ended up with an unbootable Vista disk).
Short version of the question - will we need to replace utilities like these
with versions that work with Vista. If so, is there a list of compatable
versions?
