I often find a virus or trojan by using Trendmicro's "Housecall" that
no other antivirus programs even mention. The most recent example is
HTML Adver.A. The only referece, on the web, is from people who have
run Housecall. This is either very good antivirus software or very
good marketing, eg. hoax. Any comments?

Antivirus providers do not have the same policy regarding sypwares, adwares,
ad so on...

HTML Adver.A is one of them.

Try running spybot S&D which will likely find the same thing (but
possibly with a different name). There is no agreement where viruses
stop & spyware/adware/cr&p-in-general starts.

Other antivirus vendors probably use a different alias name. Many av
products now alert on adware and spyware. In the case of KAV, they
still have their "extra" defs for such parasites kept in special
download sites. Eventually, KAV will probably include these extra defs
with their standard defs.

In helping people track down info, I've noticed that Trend is
particularly strong in supplying descriptions and removal info. They
do a great job keeping their encyclopedia up to date. And no doubt
their Housecall service is popular. So you're seeing the effects of
all these factors when you search for info. It makes it seem as if
Trend is dominant among the av vendors with parasite detection, when
they may not be at all.

Trend Online is a great service that has solved problems for me
several times. I always assume that no tool catches everything, and
once was able to use AVG to clean out a virus that Trend didn't find.

I always assumed that Trend Online used the same database, and
scan engine as the version I buy and install. I like Trend.

I often recommend Trend's Sysclean (the sys-up d/l from my web site)
since it has the advantage of a resident scanner (can be run in Safe
mode).
