I have an Asus branded Radeon 9800 Pro w/256 video card installed in one of
my boxes, loaded with the drivers and software that came in the retail box.
The OS is Windows XP Home Ed - SP2. Windows Update informed me of a driver
update for my card. I installed it. Everything works fine. But, the video
adapter is now listed as a "Radeon 9800XT" in the device manager, Driver is
6.14.10.6396. The Asus website does not list this driver. Is this the
correct driver for my card?

Yeah. It's kinda like cutting off a finger with a power tool. You look at it
and think to yourself: "I shouldn't have done that".

Yes....for me its...I know this is going to be bad... I Don't want to 'look
' at it.

LOL. Thanks Dave.
Now the follow up: Best way to "go back".
Option 1: Add/Remove programs > Uninstall driver (Leave "Control Panel" and
"Software") > Reboot > Load driver from Asus CD setup.
Option 2: Device Manager > Drivers > Roll back Driver
Option 3: Device Manager > Drivers > Update Driver > Find it on Asus CD.
Option 4: Device Manager > Drivers > Delete Driver > Reboot > Load driver
from Asus CD setup.
Option 5: Device Manager > Display Adapters > Remove adapter > Reboot > Load
everything from the Asus CD setup.

None of the above.

Use the Catalyst uninstaller, then install the latest catalyst drivers
downloaded from ATI.

Freakin Weird.
Uninstalled everything. Reinstalled the original drivers from the original
CD. Still shows up as a Radeon 9800XT. Same driver as I had before. WTF

Windows chose the newer drivers, which were the ones downloaded from Windows
Update. You need to install the catalyst drivers downloaded from
TI. -Dave

Not arguing with you. You are probably right. (And I have all the Catalyst
downloads ready to go). But I Uninstalled using the ATI utility in
Add/Remove. Then installed using the ATI CD setup. Didn't let New Hardware
Found Wizard run. Would Windows be able to override that?

you have to have the standard VGA driver loaded that comes with windows
before ATI install will work. you could manually select the driver during
the update process. select 'show all drivers' and choose standard vga.

oh come on. use the catalyst uninstaller from ati to remove ALL ati
software on the system. reboot and ignore windows pleas to intall their
****ed up driver. then install the catalyst driver less the control center
crap (in other words use 5.10 or what ever was the latest with the CONTROL
PANEL) and be done with it. control center is utter crap for the 9800
series cards and requires .net for it to work. the boot times will lag and
cause you to wonder if the friggin' thing is ever going to load versus the
times on a control panel install. or, on the other hand you can get the
modded Omega drivers and have even better performance.

btw TVeblen, you have not been ****ing with bios mods on the 9800 have you?
there are a few hacks out there to make a pro an xt with the proper updates.

No. I've never been impressed with overclocking and hardware hacks. Fuzzy
dice stuff. No time, no interest.
But could Microsoft do that with a driver update? That's when the device
description changed. And I could not "Roll Back" either.
Both ATI and ASUS make no driver distinction between any of the models in
the 9800 series Radeons. Same driver download if you got a Pro or and XT. So
does any of this really matter? I mean, the thing works great. I'm waiting
for a reply from ATI on this one. I'll post back if they respond.

what is the exact asus model number. most if not all radeon cards use the
catalyst drivers, so they will detect which gpu that is installed.

ms update a pro to xt, no. misidentify a piece of hardware, more than
likely.

but you have not stated whether you used the catalyst uninstaller to wipe
ALL ati software from your system. did you? did you bother to go to
atitech.com and get the catalyst drivers? if you don't want the control
center or control panel option from ati, you have the option during
installation to just install the bare driver.

stop mucking about with the ms updates! geez if you are that worried about a
roll back you might as well use system restore and have it totaly screw you
up too!

The error with using MS Update was long ago. Spilled milk. Won't happen
again.

I have the downloads. Did not use them (yet).
Ideally, I would really like to just go back to where I was. With the
original driver. I don't need to or want to upgrade any drivers unless there
is some pressing reason. I was originally put off by the fact that the
Catalyst driver required MS .NET Framework to be installed. I can't stand it
when you are forced to change the system to upgrade the part. So I made some
attempts at rolling back. No luck. No sweat either. You say I can install
driver w/o all that shit on my box. That's great. I will do that if I decide
not to just let well enough alone.

Just got a reply from the ATI group. The driver I have is correct for my
card, she says.

If it were me and I was irritated by the description, I would relieve the
registry of the description of 9800xt remove all INF files from the INF
folder that contains anything ATI. Reboot cancel any hardware detection
that comes up. make sure standard VGA is installed as the driver then
install ATI downloads.

Did dat. Where I ran into a problem was the "standard vga" part. Freakin
Windows won't load it as a driver. I even copied vga.sys to a floppy to try
and hand feed the thing. No go. "The driver you have is more recent....." .
I found a KB article to force Windows to select Standard VGA, but it was for
W2000 and the "Disable the device" option does not come up in XP. Got any
tricks to force standard VGA in XP?
Thanks for all your thoughts.
