Hi to all,

My next PC is due soon and same one did warn me about WindowsXP. He said
that every time I connect to the net, my PC will get checked what
programs are installed.
I believe he is having me on, but do you know about this?

Have a great day, and thanks for any replays.

Gery, well it might not be as bad as he said but especially with
Broadband, you should be really thinking about a good
Firewall, Antivirus and Spyware, adware and Trojan removers. There are
Services that check what you have installed
such as Belarc but you have to download there software and they provided
you with an inventory of your systems
hardware and software.

To the OP...
MS does not check your computer for all installed software
or where you surf.

The do check for valid COA license when you do Windows
Update and or Office update. As long as your software is
legal and not stolen (pirated) this is not a problem.

Before you connect your new computer to the Internet the
first time, be sure that you have turned the Windows ICF
(firewall ) ON. This should be an option you'll see when
you created the connection, if not, before you turn the
broadband modem on, open your network connection
properties/advanced tab and turn the firewall on by check
the box that says "protect my computer."

If you download and install the free Zone Alarm fire it will
alert you to outbound Internet traffic, something the
current MS Windows firewall does not do.

So what if they do check your software , they cant do
anything , even if your firewall is off they can only
find your present IP address and send you nasty Emails
they cant find out who you are unless you tell them.
There are more than 4.5 million Kazaa users all with
illegal software, music, films, and one person has yet to
be prosecuted.
I think microsoft has enough money and enough to do
without checking if you have a dodgy program on your
computer.

Utter nonsense.

However, there are measures you should take to protect yourself from
hackers, spammers, and the like. Install, run often, and keep updated an
anti-virus program and an anti-spyware program. Also use a firewall program.

He doesn't know what he's talking about. It is not true.

Hi Jim,

thanks for your replay.

Thats to the point. I got Office2000 Premium from my brother as he
visited me in 3 years back. It looks ligit but without Manuals. As he
had a week stopover in Bangok it may be pirated.
He did let look through that it cost him a bit, so I can't ask him.
Now you can see my concern about the rumor that XP PC getting checked.

Thanks for the hints below.

I don't think that they can check on software before
XP/2002...

They do check Windows XP.

Gery, relax. XP only checks XP and drivers for your hardware, etc. If you
have downloaded MP3's, the police will not come take you away!!
