Hello.

I'm a complete newbie with MM. Before I start to play around with it, I
need to know if it is capable of doing this.

I have a head and shoulders video of someone talking about some photos, some
photos and some background music.

The idea is that the background music plays quietly at all times. The video
plays with its audio going. As the person talks about the photos the video
switches to show the photo with the audio from the person continuing to play.
Then it switches back to the person.

Can MM do this? Is there a good starter site that can get me going?

Thanks.

If you split the video to insert the still
shots...synching the narration with the
video would be a problem...

Maybe the solution would be an overlay
or picture in picture effect..

Yup Movie maker totally can do this and it will tell you how to do it. I
would try experimenting with the video to photo transitions first which is a
snap really and then play with the sound levels after that, you can fade
sound in and out just as easily as you can with the video.

Yes I had a play around with it earlier and found that splitting the
narration video up did create problems with keeping the sound in sync.
Especially when I used transition effects on the photos as well.

While I can probably break the video up to reduce the problem, it has become
something of fun problem to work through as a learning exercise.

Thanks for the links, I'm working my way through them.

I'll have to look into it. I'm using the timeline at the moment. I dropped
the video in, then tried dropping the pics into it. It will only let me
place them at the beginning or end of the video.

I'd like to put the in the middle, and have it fade in and out without
losing the sound from the main video. I've tried playing around with
breaking the video up, but that led to problems keeping the sound in sync.

The closest I came to getting it working, was to drop the video into the
Audio/Music section. Then drop it again into the video section but mute its
sound. Then cut it up from there.

It's been a fun learning experience, but many times it feels like I'm
fumbling around in the dark. I'm not really sure of the terms, so it is hard
to search for help.

But it's good to know I should be able to do what I'm trying to do.

Thanks.

Split the video and drop in a still shot
anywhere you like. The Split button is
just below your view screen.

You can drag a copy of the main video
to the Audio/Music track and it will play
continously. Then you could mute the
sound on the Audio track. This is where
synching may be an issue,
