Using a XP home computer, log into a Win2k server via a VPN connection using
PPTP, then use remote desktop control to control another XP computer on the
same LAN as the server?

You should be able to do the first part (even in XP Home I would imagine) by
following:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/using/howto/gomobile/vpns.asp

Once you have authenticated - you should have a PPTP (VPN) granted IP,
meaning "you are behind the corporate firewall, what now, boss?"

Now, you asked if you could then use Remote Desktop to then control another
XP computer on the same LAN as the server..? The answer is "Yes, but with
caveats." Your home machine, once it VPN's (PPTP'd) into the coprporate
network, *is* on the same network as the server and all machines that are on
that network as well. So you should be able to now ping and contact the
remote machine in any way that you could sitting at the server you setup VPN
on. However, in order to use remote desktop to connect to that machine,
that machine must be remote desktop ready - it must be capable of running
remote desktop sever (it is Windows XP Pro, Windows 2000 Server or Windows
2003 server), it must have remote desktop enabled, the proper users you want
to use must have the right to log in remotely, and if it's firewall is
enabled, the proper ports must be opened to allow this to happen.

Meet all those criteria? Have fun!
