I have an XP Pro desktop set up to allow me to log in
remotely over my LAN. Is it possible to log into the
domain via this PC? I get the message that the local
security policy of the system does not permit me to log
on interactively. Can I change this? ... How?

Thanks.

If you are getting the message that the "local security policy of the system
does not permit me to log on interactively" - then you are not setup to log
into the machine remotely. The domain administrator may be preventing your
domain user from doing this, or you may have not given your domain user the
proper rights to do so.

Check the settings for your remote desktop and make sure your domain user
has rights to log in using remote desktop.

Thanks. Right ... from the XP pc I am at, I select
Remote Desktop connection to the other XP PC that I want
to log onto the Win2K Domain Controller through. This
time, I used the domain administrator, at it worked. If
I want to use a regular domain user instead of the domain
administrtor, where/how do I give that user the right to
log in, like the domain administrator? I thought it
might be a security policy, but I don't think so. And I
don't want to make that user a part of the Domain
Administrators Group.

Thanks.

On the server machine (the one you are connecting to) you must go into
Control Panel -> System, "Remote" tab.. Click on the "Select Remote
Users..." button..

Add appropriate users.

Just to clarify, when you refer to the server machine I
am connecting to, you do mean the one I am ultimately
connecting to, right? I am ultimately connecting to a
Win2k AD domain controller. On this server, I do not
find a "Remote" tab. I have read, and do see, "allow
access" on the dial in tab. Will try this ... wonder if
I have to set up VPN??

Windows 2000-based servers contain Remote Desktop functionality, but
it is installed in a completely different place (and has a different
name). Go to Control Panel => Add/Remove Programs => Add/Remove
Windows Components. Install Terminal Services (do not install
Terminal Services Licensing). Select the option for operating in
remote administration mode. Let the install complete. Now you should
have Remote Desktop-type connectivity.
