Is this possible?

We have 5 servers and I would like to install a seperate
server with a HDD partitioned into 5 to have the exact
setting of each of the 5 servers so that it can easily be
booted to the corresponding server in the event of a
failure.

To go about this, I was thinking of backing up the System
State Data for each of the servers and restoring it to the
appropriate partition on the new backup server so as to
have the exact settings for each server on different
partitions.

Is this possible or can anyone advise on a better way to
go about setting up each partition with the same settings
as each server it represents.

Thank you.

Adeyinka.

I can't think of why that wouldn't work to have a hot
spare like that. You are going to have to restore more
than the system state retore though. You will need to do
a full file restore and a system state restore for each
server.

I guess the reason that this seems a bit strange is that
it will require a lot of effort to keep the hot spares up
to date. You will be doing 5 system restores everyday.
You would be better off I think, just loading server on a
machine and then having it ready to accept the restore of
whatever server goes down. If the downtime associated
with this is not acceptable, then you probably need to
look at clustering your servers.
