Is this OK as a file migration cable?

I need to transfer My Pictures from Win ME to Win XP. As ME doesn't
have a writable CD, I was hoping to use XPs Transfer Wizard. I know
that a serial file transfer cable is recommended, but I was wondering if
I can use a USB file transfer cable that came with Detto's
Intellimover. Thanks,
Adam

Both computers have ethernet cards/ports. Can one make a connection
this way? If so, how? Thanks again,
Adam

Thanks, Jim. But I need to know if the Detto USB cable that allowed for
file data transfer can be considered a cross over cable. I know there
are other cables, but why chould I buy one if I can use the Detto cable?

Hi,

Yes, but you need to use their software to run it. XP's transfer wizard
cannot be set to just transfer specific files, only system states plus
associated data.

You said "Both computers have ethernet cards/ports" so I
said just cross-over cable. But IF the USB cable has the
hub hardware in the middle and both computers have USB
ports, it should work. But it will be very slow as compared
to an Ethernet cross-over cable, particularly if the ME
computer is USB 1.1 only.

You can buy a cross-over Cat5 cable for $3.73 from CyberGuys
item 120 6110. XP networking wizard will set it up. You
can do whatever you want. But using the Ethernet ports will
be faster.

My USB cable does have some sort of cylindrical thing-a-ma-jig on its
wire, so maybe it is a "cross-over" usb cable. But, as you say it could
be slow as myME usb port is 1.1. So, using an ethernet connection seems
to b emore desirable and workable. Is the cross over Cat5 cable you
refer to the cable to use to connect the ethernet ports? Hope so, a
cheap enough investment for the transfer.

Interesting. I thought that I read that the Wizard will transfer
selected files, also.

Yes, selected files "in addition to" the system state.

The cable I mentioned at www.cyberguys.com is a cross-over
CAT5 cable. You can also find cross-over cable at BestBuy,
CompUSA, in fact any half way decent computer or office
supply store. But CyberGuys are as inexpensive as any that
I know of. But if all you order is a cable remember
shipping cost, the store down the street may be cheaper.
