Is this normal??

I have an XP system.

When I check System Information it says 256 mb physical memory;
76.2 available physical memory.

Isn't that figure somewhat small??

Also, is there a resource meter program like I had with W98?

Is 76.2 a small amount, well that depends on how many
programs/services you have up and running

I didn't think I had that much. It is now at 93.5.
You know, I look at my startup menu under msconfig and I just don't
recognize much of the stuff. I don't know whether to uncheck items or not.

Right click on the Taskbar in a blank spot and click on Task Manager. Click
on the Performance tab if it is not showing. I think this is what you have
in mind.
Most people I know use 512mb, but most are Overclockers and love to buy
hardware. I have 512mb but I use Photoshop type programs. If I was you I
would not worry about it until/if the computer starts using the page file a
lot, and it slows it down quite a bit.
Don't forget to look in your startup folder as well, you may see something
you know you really don't need to start at boot-up. I always take out the
Office things as I do not use it very much.
Now don't go unchecking stuff until you know for sure what they are and if
you should have them running. I know it is hard if your "the glass is half
empty" type....like me.

Jitterbug:

What is PF usage? What would be a high number??

Mine is about 180 mb

The computer has not slowed down at all.

Well, XP had a good memory management system. If you don?t have heavy hard
disk access while work, meaning virtual memory use, and write/reading on
HD, just forget it. But you can install Memturbo and just after boot
increase the total amount of free memoty from 70-80 mb to 180 Mb.

That's referring to the amount of virtual memory in use (page file). With
only 256mb of physical memory, most of this will be used by Windows itself
so it will need to use some of your hard drive as virtual memory for
applications...
