All the firewall will do is alert you when a program attempts to access the
network/Internet, it's up to you to decide whether to allow or block the
access. By seeing what program(s) are transmitting and receiving data you
can determine if the traffic pattern you're seeing is normal or not.

Hard to say. If you install a software firewall such as the free Zone Alarm [free for
personal use] you can restrict outbound traffic also to only authorized applications
such as Internet Explorer and Outlook Express. Other
applications will be blocked or
ask your permission to access the internet. Additionally make sure you do regular
scans for viruses and parasites [AdAware is free] being sure to use the latest
updates downloaded from the vendors websites before
doing
the scan. TCPView can be
used to view current port connections which you may want to do when you are not
browsing the internet to see what is up and list process/application using a
port. --- Steve

My internet activity starts off with about 40 packets sent
and received.
Then about 10 mins later it goes to 100 000 packets sent
and received. I am not sure if this is normal because 100
000 seems like a lot of activity while all i am doing is
going around the internet.
Thanks for helping! =)
