Hi,

I would like to no if this kind of setup is possible:

A wireless access point, connected to my cable modem. 2 PC's accessing the
Internet via the WLan AND a mini network between those 2 PC's over the
Wlan?

Both PC's running Windows XP.

Thanks for any help,

Alex

It is called a virtual network and most upper brand routers will support it
or if its a modem connected to a server which is sharing internet access,
then its built into windows.

For example - my router / DSL modem is able to accept virtual private
connections into the network over the internet / wan. When a computer makes
a vpn connection to the router, it will give it access as if it is part of
the network.

Businesses usually use this system for mobile staff who need to access
various network resources while still being secure via the internet. I can
effectively use windows file sharing and become part of my home workgroup or
log on to my home server and print to the printer on my desk from anywhere
in the world where an internet connection is available (at a fast speed of
course)

I have re-read your post and think you may not be thinking of a vpn.

It is just a standard network. You have a switch with a router / modem, and
2 computers attached to it. Instead of having the computers connected by
cable, you use wifi / wlan instead.

If both computers are able to talk to the router then they both can talk to
each other - unless they are running a software firewall on them such as
wxp's or zone alarm.

Sorry if my previous reply confused you. I have someone next to me trying to
test a router that knows nothing about networks and he asked me if you could
connect to your network remotly via the net at the same time as i was
reading your post. got a bit mixed up lol.
