Using HD tach i ran the test on my 40 Gig western digital HD,it gave
the following results

Random access time 14.6 millisecs
Burst read speed 57 MB/sec

Read speed max 26.9 MB/sec
min 16.4 MB/sec
Average 24.7 Mb/sec
cpu utilisation 15.8 %

If this is bad,how can i improve it? Im using xp pro with about half a
gig of memory and a pentium 3 500Mhz processor

thanks

CPU utilization looks a little high, but mainly it depends on how old
the hard drive is. Apparently you're running in ATA66 mode, so is
this a Via 693 chipset motherboard? Make sure you're using a fairly
modern Via 4in1 driver if it is, but for good system performance
increase you're wasting your time, the drive is outclassing the rest
of the system, which needs replaced.

I wouldn't run XP Pro on that either, will slow it down even further.

You have not said what speed drive it is e.g ATA 33/66/100/133?

Well the mobo is a slightly old Abit BE6-II and the HD is a western
digital WD40 0bb 40 gig using UDMA66,maybe i need to check if my mobo
and HD supports anything faster?.

More than likley. If not you can always use a PCI controller card to
bypass the limitations :)
Sincere apologies for posting the same query here a number of
