I have recently been getting messages when I have tried to access the web,
which state :

'Explorer has caused an error in WININET.DLL, explorer will now close
restart PC '

I think it may have started since I (unsuccessfully ( tried to upgrade my IE
5.5
to IE 6) ?

What should I do ?

Any advise gratefully received.

Jim

There are infectors that target that file so it is possible. The Babylonia comes to mind.

However, the hint is that the error occurs after an unsuccessful IE upgrade so you may have
a mixed/matched DLL problem thus generating the errors noted.

I suggest re-executing; "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\ie6setup.exe"
And get IE6 proper installed or repaired.

Sounds to me that the upgrade to IE 6 had an upgrade issue. This can be
corrected by uninstalling the upgrade falling back to IE 5 and then
upgrading to IE 6 again or telling IE 6 to try to fix itself. But that
may be based on what Win O/S you are using.

I'd try replacing the dll file 1st. Go to http://www.dll-files.com &
download the wininet.dll file. Much easier & faster than uninstalling &
reinstalling.

Jim,

Uninstall the update. Go to ad and remove programs it control panel.
