I have remote users trying to connect in and usually can, but we are starting
to get the following message -
"The remote session was discontinued because the local computer's client
access license could not be upgraded or renewed."

Are the client and server not talking together to resolve the renewal/upgrade?

It appears this is a "discontinutation issue, rather than an
authentication/licensing issue - correct?

We have an SBS server and separate member server running the TS from W2K3
server.

Where is your TS Licensing Server running?
What version of SBS are you running, SBS2003 or SBS2000?
Have you checked the EventLog on the TS to see if it can locate the
LS?
Have you checked in the TS Licensing Manager if you have available
2003 TS CALs?
Which type of TS CALs did you install, Per User or Per Device?

The main DC is W2K3 SBS, the member server (TS) is running W2K3.

The message was "The remote session was discontinued because the local
computer's client access license could not be upgraded or renewed." But I
will look in the event viewer when I get out there to see if there were any
other TS issues.

The servers are right next to each other and can browse each other fine.

By the way these are user cals.

Since the content of the thread is gone, I've no clear idea of the
problem, but your "By the way these are user cals" statement can
hold the cause of the problem.

Is the Terminal Server (not the Licensing Server!) set to use "Per
User" licensing? The default is "Per Device".
You can check this from Administrative Tools - Terminal Services
Configuration - Server Settings - Licensing Mode
If it's set to Per Device mode, it will look for a Device TS CAL
and will not issue your Per User TS CALs.

Check this article, it explains that even after you have
switched licensing mode on the TS, your Per User TS CAL count will
not be decremented:

Hi - and thanks for being patient with me.

I had a tech go onsite to the user side and with his laptop, log in without
a hitch. The tech successfully logged on with their uers accounts at the
remote site. So it sounds like it is a client side issue. These users had
been logging on successfully since last November. Now we began getting this
issue. As far as I know, no network config changes (firewall, routers, etc).
My tech will verify this as well. Any ideas?

Could you please include the old content in your posts? I've no idea
how this thread started off.

That a tech can log on with his laptop doesn't mean a thing. If the
problem is a licensing problem, then he has probably received a
temporary Per Device license, and that's why he was able to connect.

The client that doesn't connect could have an expired temporary
license, and cannot renew it.

Verify your licensing situation in Ts Licensing Manager, and check
the licensing mode on the TS.
