Is this a bug

I create a folder called "test" on my desktop. Within this directory I create
a folder called "test_files" and a file called "test.html" (not
"test.html.txt" if I used notepad with the default view options). I then
delete just the the file "test.html" but the "test_files" folder and any
contents are deleted along with it.

I'm running Vista Business 64 SP1

Try Disk Error Checking the drive. Rightclick drive icon in Explorer,
Properties, Tools tab.

If you save a web page as html ( web page complete ) you get an
xxxx.html file and a xxxx_files folder to hold items/images linked from
the page. When you delete the html file the _files folder goes as well
by design, I guess that's in case you hadn't noticed the _files folder.

It seems you have artificially created that situation though I wouldn't
have thought it was a real problem.

<sigh>

No, it's by design. In Folder Options/View there is an setting to change
this behaviour.

That's normal. It did the same in XP.

Ah

Well it was a real problem as I didn't know it was a "by design" bug.

the layout of our websites are in the format

file1.html
<file1_files> picture1.jpg picture2.jpg etc

file2.html
<file2_files> picture1.jpg picture2.jpg etc

On our local network copy we work on directories were randomly going missing
to the point of accusations being hurled across the room "You've just deleted
all my work you <insert profanity here>" and until I spotted the reason
yesterday would have likely carried on.

I see, so it wasn't just a test then. I think a folder file1_links
or somesuch should survive but I guess you're there already.

It was reproducable steps for the purpose of asking the question on the forum.

Yup, global search and replace underway :)
