The most frustrating problem I have with front page is I do a publisher. It
takes maybe 20 minutes to list the pages. I go away. Come back. THere's the
dialog box "XYZ already exists". I click yes to all. THen get a message the
connection has timed out.

Is there any way to say to get the damn thing to just publish and not ask
any questions?

Try using Publish ALL / Complete.

In FP 2003 in the Remote Web Site View see the Remote Web Site Properties (in the publishing tab)
