Is there any way to verify the hardware of a RAID 5 array ?

I got an IBM ServerRAID 4L and 3 x 36G RAID5 array with 3 logical
partitions, which is running a DC and E2K server. The IS got some problem
these days and the problem maybe caused by hardware.

I didn't find any hardware related event but still want to verify the
hardware see if it is running well. Can the RAID 5 logical partition be
check for errors with Windows2000's disk check ? Or should I need some
special application for this ?

Any hints will be greatly appriciated!

Thanks!!

You can use the IBM ServeRaid Manager.

The latest version is 6.10. Download the .iso file from IBM and burn a CD
from it.

Run the installation utility in Windows to install the managment app and
updated drivers, then reboot the server with the CD still in the drive.

This will update the bios and firmware of any array controllers it finds so
that they are at a compatable version with the windows driver.

You can interigate your volumes from the management app, however you can
still run chkdisk on each logical volume (what the OS sees as a disk) and
perform any other operations that you desire, just as you would any other
disk.

If you need more information, let me know.

This is very informative, thank you very much.

Since my English is not so good as I'm not a native English guy, as my
understanding, what you mean is I can use the check disk utilities of
Windows2000 to check the logical disk for error, right ?

Is that necessary to update the driver version and the firmware version for
doing the check disk ? It is a production system and I don't want to modify
it before the store be repaired. We are going to buy a new hardware and move
the job from the current one to the new one but anyway it will be months to
go.

Thanks again.

You do not need to update the driver to do a chkdisk. you can perform that
now, but you should consider scheduling a maintenance window where you will
spin the ServeRaid CD and the UdateXpress CD for this system.
