Is there any way to get Hotmail on Vista?

Okay, so Windows Mail does not support the Hotmail HTTP protocol.
Surely, there must be an alternative way to get email downloaded on a
Vista computer. Or are the engineers at Microsoft so daft stupid that
they dropped this important portal without providing a backup?

I am no big fan of HTTP email. I thought it was a stupid idea from the
start. Another Microsoft attempt to create proprietary control over
emails, when everyone else was using POP3. Now that they have given up
on HTTP, how is one supposed to migrate to Vista when they have a
Hotmail account?

Thanks for your help.

Richard..

P.S. No I do not have the latest version of Outlook. I have Outlook
2000, which does not support HTTP and I am not going to upgrade any time
soon. I have to use Outlook Express because it is the only program I
know of that can access HTTP email.

I downloaded and installed WLMD (twice), but both times when I start it
for the first time it gives me the following error message:

"Windows Live Mail desktop could not be started because msmail.dll could
not be initialized. Windows Live Mail desktop may not be installed
correctly."

I have installed it, uninstalled it, and reinstalled it. The message
persists.

Any hints on what to do next?

Thank you,

Richard..

I use Hot Pop a FREE program to read hotmail in WM.

I'm not a WLMD expert, but there is a peer support newsgroup:
microsoft.public.windows.live.mail.desktop (cross-posted).

I was looking around for other solutions and ran across the comments
about Microsoft restricting access in certain situations.

Could the problem be caused because I am (or rather my mother is) a
paying Hotmail customer and I have activated the Windows Live access on
the web that I am now being blocked trying to use these other programs?

No it's because it's hosed the message store and uninstalling does not
remove any references to the old messages stores.

Uninstall WLMd.
Delete the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail desktop
subkey

Since it's not run apparently, there's not need to move the message stores
to retain any e-mails.

Look in the Documents and Settings\<user account>\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail desktop and delete the folders in it.

Reboot

Reinstall.

1. Microsoft has not given up on HTTP mail.

2. There is a program called HotPop or HotPops that lets you use WonMail
for Hotmail.

3. Microsoft has Windows Live Mail Desktop that gets most kinds of mail
including POP3, IMAP, and Hotmail. http://get.live.com/betas/mail_betas

You first have to register the Hotmail address at Windows Live Mail

I thought I did that when I switched the web version from the old
Hotmail account over to the Windows Live Mail mail account. Now,
whenever I go to www.hotmail.com it takes me to Windows Live Mail.

Is there something else I need to do?

If so, where is this?

Richard..

Okay, I did everything but the Documents and Settings folders. I was
able to get the folders to appear. But when I attempt to open them I
get an "Access is Denied" error.

How do I get around this one? Haven't found the controls for this yet.

Richard..

Are you logged into that account?

And you can't access that folder.
Right click on it and check permission on it. I thought this was your
mother's account?

My mother is going to use the program, but I wanted to install it as the
administrator first to make sure everything works before giving it to
her to use as her regular email program. Right now she is still working
off of the old XP computer.

Okay, before I do something crazy here this is what is happening at the
permissions level.

First, I am the only account on this system that I can see and I am
setup as the administrator. Account name: Richard(Home\Richard)

I go to the "Documents and Settings" Properties and click on the
"Security" tab. I click on "Administrators (Home\Administrators)" and
all the items, except "Special permissions" is checked. The
Administrators already has "Full control". None of the items is marked
as "Deny".

Looking through the various buttons and tabs, I wonder if I should
rename my account to "Administrator" Would that change the response I
am getting?

Thanks,

Richard..

A couple of questions, has WLMd ever started? If it hasn't then there are no
e-mails to worry about saving and I would imagine the permissions is cause
of the problems.

If you've uninstalled, remove the reg subkeys, take control of the folders
and subfolder then delete them.

Okay, I took control of the WLMd and deleted those folders. I then
downloaded the program again, just to be sure and reinstalled.
Everything seems to be working now.

Thanks,

Just one more question. I attempted to change my username to
"Administrator", but was warned told that the account already existed.

Where is it? When I go to the login screen, only my own account appears
and CTL-ALT-DLT does nothing. It doesn't bring up a login screen like
XP does.

How do I log into the "Administrator" account?

Thank you for your help.
