Is there any way in script form I can change the order of wireless connections?

Hi All

My boss has a brand new WinXP Pro SP2 laptop for use at the office and at
home.

Both locations are wireless setups, but use different settings to provide
reliable use. You have to believe me on this one.

Both wireless connections are listed in the preferred networks list and work
PROVIDING that they are at the top of the list at the time. In other words,
if he is at home the home connection has to be at the top of the list and if
he is at the office then the office connection has to be at the top of the
list for the wireless connection to be picked up and used.

I have no problem with this quirk, in that it won't move to the next
connection in the list if it can't use the first one, but I need to create
some form of script/toggle that enables me to put a shortcut on the desktop
so that my boss can simply double-click on the connection that he wants to
use and in effect it will move the chosen wireless connection to the top of
the list.

Is this possible?

Thanks

Have you checked the manufacture's website for updated wireless
drivers? Wireless drivers are the most updated software on many
manufacturer's download sites and even though your machine is "brand
new", you may be using drivers that are 3, 4, or 5 versions out-of-
date. Connect to the manufacture's website, download the latest
wireless driver, install, and see if that quirk doesn't disappear.
Note that depending on the chipset, there may be two downloads -- a
driver and a software utility that replaces ZeroConfig.

HTH,
John

You should be able to set the "wireless" network configuration to
connect automatically. Setting the wireless network setting to
automatic connect will let the wireless adapter connect to the
wireless network as soon as it finds one. The only draw back is that
if the wireless networks "overlap" (ie: signals are very close to each
other) then the first network to answer the request will be the one
that the laptop connect to.

In my experience with my 22-laptop rich work environment i've found that
Windows XP Pro SP2 does NOT like it when you manually change the order of
the wireless networks.
When you do so, Windows XP Pro will no longer automatically connect to
any of the networks.
I had to completely erase the wireless networks in the list, and remake
them, and leave them like that. Then it worked fine.
It's look, but not touch, apparently.

You might however have better success in your setup, if you change the
preferred network connection order on your machines.
(This is not the same as changing the order of wireless networks).

To do this; you must go to:

Right-click 'My Network Places' on your desktop, choose 'Properties'.
Go to 'Advanced' (top right) and choose 'Advanced Settings...'
You'll see a list of your network adapters there.
Reorder these as you see fit; But may I suggest you keep Wireless at 1
and LAN at 2.

Priority is given to the adapter that is first on the list.
