I plan to photograph city buildings as a
project using a fish-eye lens on my camera.

Can the curved edges on these photos be
straightened out by specialist software?

Please help, Frank

I suspect there are many programs and
plug-ins that can correct for lens distortion.

Here's a trial that may be worth a look:

PTLens

If you search on Google and / or Google
Groups...for the following subjects...

lens distortion
fisheye distortion
barrell distortion
pincushion distortion

You'll find lots of discussion about it.

There are quite a few such programs around. What you are looking for is
called deconvolution. DxO is one.

Actually I have been doing some photos with
the new fisheye lens and there are very few
curves at all. However in some tight city
laneways the fisheye photographs everything,
but the high walls sort of "lean" at various
angles without showing any curvature. I
suppose the software will fix this up too?
My lens is an "Olympus ZUIKO DIGITAL ED
7-14mm 1:4.0" and I guess my question is,
does the software have to be suitable for
specific lenses?

Most barrel/pincushion distortion programs accept parameters
for the lens you are using and compensate for it accordingly.

The relevant information is usually in the EXIF data, so this
can be done quite automatically if your lens is in the database.
