I've heard of DVD9 burners in the works but is it readily available on
the market yet? Can you clone a commercial DVD? What are some good
DVD9 burners? Is DVD9 blank media available yet?
TIA!
Theyve been out for a while now. Though still new. BenQ announced
months ago their existing burners 8x would work with dual layers with
a simple firmware upgrade.
The test on it wasnt so hot though. But that was really early.
NEC has one out now their 2500a 8x burners some are said to be dual
layer and some arent. The thing is - everyones beein saying that you
can just use the firmware for the dual layer on the non-8x burners and
they work. DOnt know if there are any hardwar differences though as
some have said.
I just bought one - Maddog brand. Maddog and others put NECs in their
boxes. Some have said their rebates are iffy but Ive gotten all of my
Maddog rebates quickly and they have a 2 year warrnty vs 1 year from
all the makers. Maddog had the 8x NEC dual layer (says so on the box
DUAL LAYER) at COMPUSA for $79 after rebates. I snagged one .
Havent seen any media though. But frankly I have less use for it than
8x. I dont see any 8x media either but some say some 4x media burns at
8x. We dont get that in my region though and the shipping costs are
too high to make it worth so we tend to use 2x media here. Even 4x
media is rare here and high priced. I only got the 8x because it was a
good deal so why not?
Dual layer- not a big deal for me. Even SVCDs look ok to me let alone
a DVD9 compressed slightly to fit on a DVD-R. Cant really tell even on
my HDTV. Maybe on a big screen you can I dont know. So the only thing
dual layer would mean to me is super high costs probably for the media
in the forseeable future when it does start selling.
