program that can partition my Pri HD (XP2) with out losing everything ? I
would like to dual boot from a second partition.

You will need a third party utility like Partition Magic, Acronis Disk
Director,
BootIt Next Gen (which has a free trial) and Super Fdisk (worth a look).

BootIt: http://www.bootitng.com/
Acronis:
http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/diskdirector/partitioning.html
Partition Magic:
http://www.powerquest.com/home_homeoffice/products/overview.jsp?pcid=sp&pvid=pm80
Super Fdisk Partition Utility:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/Super_Fdisk_d4985.html

As always backup any important data files (documents, photos, music, etc.),
before using such a tool as there is always a small chance that something
can go wrong.

Better still backup (Image backup) your entire C: partition to an external
drive
or a second internal drive.
You can use Acronis True Image (Free trial version) to do this.

JS

Thanks JS; will take a look at those.

JS; The Acronis product looks good. I have and do use their True Image 11.
Maybe try the freebe.

For just non-destructive partitioning, I'd recommend Partition Magic. For
backup and restoration (etc) also, I'd recommend Acronis True Image. It's
probably wisest to have both - and use the simplest tool for the appropriate
job.

Thanks Bill

Question related to this thread.
Just been reading in a magazine article about MS Virtual PC 2007 which
apparently can run a second OS without partitioning. It states that it only
works with XP Pro and not Home but there are other commercial virtual pc
apps which will work with any OS.
Does anyone use this, is it a viable alternative to partitioning and does it
work as described?

Serveral "virtualization" systems state that they can also run on
several version of Linux. However, setting up a Linux "server" is not
as easy as Windows.
