Is there a way to write protect an IDE drive at hardware level?

Is there any hardware device that connects between an IDE drive and its IDE
controller such that all writes to the drive would be disabled?

I was trying to clone a failing drive with norton ghost when it aborted due
to IO error and seemed to have done something (wrote) to the drive! That was
scary. I want a sure way to protect a drive while I attempt to clone or
recover data from it.

Hello Peter,

Thank you for posting.

Based on my experience, there is no built-in method to perform write
protect on an IDE drive in Windows XP.

I suggest that you use Ghost in Dos and this may resolve this problem.
Also, you can perform this in safe mode to see if Ghost can run well.

The step to boot into safe mode is below:

1. Restart the computer.
2. Keep pressing F8 key until the Windows Startup menu appears.
3. Choose the Safe Mode with Network, and press Enter.

Please note that we are happy to help provide information on this issue for
you, we recommend that you work with Symantec for assistance with this.

I am including some general troubleshooting information, as well as a link
to the third party application's support portal for your convenience.

Hope this helps.
