Is there a way to run Sidebar gadgets on the desktop...

with the Sidebar closed? The Sidebar PM clearly said there was such a way
in the Channel 9 interview last year but maybe that has been removed.
Also, is there a way to change the Sidebar so it doesn't black out the
entire right side of the monitor? It would be nice if it wasn't visible
at all and the few gadgets I'm using were all that were visible.
 
I think what you what to do is place the gadgets you want on the desktop
then right click on the sidebar and select hide sidebar.

What you can do is right click a gadget and click on "detach from sidebar"
then move it where you want. Then once you have got the ones you want right
click the sidebar and click on "hide sidebar". Your gadgets will remain and
the bar will be gone. To get the sidebar back, select the option in the
taskbar by clock.

There is a way to run gadgets on the Desktop.
Just right-click on a gadget, and choose "detach from Sidebar", then drag it
where ever on the Desktop you want it.

If you choose the "Move gadget" function rather than "detach from Sidebar"
function, moving a Gadget off the Sidebar will cause it to hide when the
Sidebar is hidden.

To hide the Sidebar, click on the Sidebar icon (a tiny picture of a Desktop)
and choose "Hide Sidebar".

NOTE: If Sidebar options are set to always show the Sidebar on top of other
windows, the Sidebar will disappear entirely if you hide it, otherwise, it
will appear as very transparent (almost completely transparent, in fact)
rather than hide.

Rather than "thinking", why not EXPERIMENT for yourself? That's the way
I've learned what I know about computers (other than the year and a half of
formal training I got in my youth).

To move a gadget to the Desktop,
1) Right-click on a gadget, and choose "Detach from Sidebar"
2) Click and drag the Gadget where ever on the Desktop you want it
3) Hide the Sidebar.

The SECOND way to accomplish this is:
1) Right-click on a Gadget on the Sidebar
2) Choose "Move"
3) Click and drag it off the Sidebar to where ever you want it on the
Desktop.
4) Hide the Sidebar

The THIRD way to accomplish it is to simply ignore step (1) of the FIRST
method, and just do steps (3) and (4) of the SECOND method.

In other words, just click-and-drag it where ever on the Desktop you want
it. WOW!! Who woulda thunk it!! Just drag it where you want it... So
simple, and you guys are trying to make a "Big Thing" out of it.

Not exactly rocket science.

Just TRY THINGS OUT for yourself. EXPERIMENT. The worst that can happen is
that you will lose all your data and programs, and have to reinstall the OS.
If you've backed up your programs and data as you should have, this really
isn't such a big deal as one might think it is.

Part of growing up is learning to experiment in Life. There are no advances
in Life without taking chances. "No Pain, no Gain". If you want to learn
anything in Life, you MUST be willing to be "wrong" and make mistakes once
in a while, even f*ing up your entire HD.

There's a hide function, but not an AUTO-hide function. Big difference.

Just like with the TASK bar on the PC or the Apple Dock, Auto-hide doesn't
appear till you run your mouse in that area. As soon as I started using the
Gadgets, the inability to do this was instantly annoying.

Auto-hide makes this extremely useful. Just like you can go to a CORNER in
OSX or hit a button to view Widgets, being able to Auto-hide the Gadget bar
makes it so much more useful to most people.

Stupid question, but...

When I hide a container, I expect the contents of that container to hide as
well.

Could you imagine the frustration if Xmas parcels did the same thing as the
sidebar?
 
When you hide the sidebar, any gadgets docked on the sidebar go away too.
Gadgets that are floating on the desktop do not.
