I wanted to ask this question and discuss this topic, but
I was unable to connect to the chat. I think the network
folks blocked the port recently.

Is there a way to remove system restore points?

Is there a way to completely disable system restore points?

I don't have any system restore components included, but
some utilities still create restore points in the System
Volume Information directory.

In particular, if you disable the pagefile using the UI, a
restore point is created that is the size of the pagefile.
You can't delete it. You can't easily see it in the file
system, but the disk space is used.

Mark,

Is this a general XP question, because it does not seem to be
Embedded-specific? Is this something that you can do with XP, but not
Embedded?

Try setting HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\
Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SystemRestore\DisableSR
to a DWORD value of 1. You might have to make this registry value
if it doesn't already exist. That sets SystemRestore to disabled. Next
tell the service not to run by setting
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\sr\Start
to 4.

I'll try this.

But, since there are no System Restore components included
in my XPe image, I suspect that there is no service to
tell not to run.

But, again, maybe System Restore has tendrils into XPe
beyond the service. Disabling might help.

There's always the chance that system restore is not making the
restore point. If that is the case hopefully whatever is making
the restore point is watching those registry keys.
