Does anyone know how one can turn of the automatic word count in Word 2000?

/Thanks - A.

What automatic word count? I've used five versions of Word, and none has
ever had an *automatic* word count; it must always be invoked through Tools
| Word Count, by clicking Recount... on the Word Count toolbar, or by
looking at the Statistics tab of File | Properties.

There's that Live Word Count on the Status Bar, which you can turn on and
off via Tools | Options, View tab (and personally drives me completely
insane). Anka, is that what you are referring to?

Is this something that came and went with Word 2000 (which I skipped) or is
available only in Mac versions, or what? I don't have some an option at
Tools | Options | View.

No idea...I am using MacWord 2001 ‰ PCWord 2000, so it could have come and
gone without you noticing. I feel like it was in MacWord 98, but am not
sure, and Mac versions do occasionally jump ahead with certain features. I
vaguely think I recall seeing it on PCs at school, maybe I will check next
time I am bored. It shows up as a sub-option for the Status Bar.

It's a horrible little feature anyhow--few things are more unhealthy when
writing a paper than constantly seeing your word count change in minor
increments.

Hi,
I'm glad Anka asked the question! I'm having the same "problem": can't find how to swtch off the counting of words.

Switching the Status bar off does not stop Word from counting e.g. when I save the document. I still see the message in the buttom of the screen (where the status bar normaly is visible). (On my computer: Word 2003, Windows XP)

There should be a place where I can switch off/disable the counting of words!????

(Has it something to do with preparing the statistics?)

It is anoying allways to wait for Word to finnish calculating the words every time I save a document (I do it very often to be sure to keep my changes).

I've used every version of Word, and like Suzanne, I've never seen what
you're seeing. I'm wondering if there might be an add-on you're using, or
perhaps some setting we've never bothered to enable, or a setting we
explicitly keep turned off. I've tried turning on/off a variety of settings,
but I can't replicate what you're seeing.

Try starting Word in "safe" mode (hold down Ctrl when you start Word, and
say "Yes" to the prompt asking if you want to start in Safe mode.

Do you still see the word-counting behavior when you save a document? If
not, then there must be an add-in or a setting that's causing the behavior.

Thanks herb

I have tried as you recommend. It looks as Word count and report number of Words in the document when opening

I cannot actually see that Word counts when saving it, but theres is something showing in a split second before the saving info is shown, also very short. It looks as the word calculating is showing in a "milisecond". Doing it many times my eye can observe that there is the word "counting" that is shown

Is there a way to stop/slow down the proces such that I can actually see whats going on

There are certain drugs that can do that for you... ;-)

Aside from that, however, there used to be a "movie" utility put out by
Microsoft that would let you "record" screen actions, so you could (for
example), demonstrate to someone else how something is done. I suspect that
recording a movie, then playing it back one frame at a time would let you
capture & see the message.

But, the larger question is... if it's happening so quickly that you can't
even really see it... why do you care? <g>

When I save, it says (very quickly) "Word is preparing to background save
[document name]". When I turn off Background Save, it just says "Word is
saving [filename]". I don't see anything about counting in either case.
