Is there a way to disable printing and keep scanning?

Brother multifunction. I don't use the printer and it won't scan and the
scanner is great, when the ink dries out, even though I don't print with it.
Anyone else have this problem? I'd buy a sheet fed scanner it the price was
reasonable.

Almost certainly no way to make this happen without cartridges in the printer
that are not empty.
You could buy the cheapest compatible cartridges you can find since you don't
care about print quality.

There must be some kind of sensor(s) that can be shorted, no?

If you can find a way then please post it, no there is no currently known way
to do this. Some Brother all-in-one's have a sensor at the left hand side of
the printer, the print carriage moves to the left and the level of ink
remaining is sensed optically, you could try messing with the sensor (covering
it or ensuring it always has light applied) but I doubt it would be this easy.

What if another liquid wer substitued for ink? Since I'm not going to be
using the printer of fax ... Is there a good sheet fed scanner out there for
$100?

If this particular printer does not use chipped cartridges then that will
probably work, I am not sure whether the cartridges are chipped or not, you are
in a position to check. If there are no chips then it is a promising idea.

I've seen chip resetters for Epson but not Brother ... your experience too?

The only chip resetters I have seen are for some Epson inkjet cartridges, I
don't think Brother use chips (now i think about it some more), some HP
cartridges can be tricked (more specifically some HP inkjets can be tricked)
but not all and Canon chips (for inkjets at least) cannot be reset.
