i have a 2 monitor setup with lots of shortcuts saved to my desktop. if i
happen to reboot with one of my monitors offline, i lose all my icon
placement settings. i would rather not use TSR utilities which take up
resources; is there a way to back up desktop icons from the registry and
re-install to the registry if the desktop is compromised?

thanks!

I don't understand why you loose your Desktop?

Not sure about the registry but you can go right to the folder and back it
up or zip it somewhere:
C:\Documents and Settings\"Login Name"\Desktop

The Login Name can be anything, depending on what you use to Log In with.
Not sure if this helps

The placement of icons in a multi-monitor setup is determined by your
video card software.

Don't know about dual-monitor setups but ... there's a freeware tweak
called, IIRC, "Restore Desktop Icons." I can't find the reference to
it on my computer. Perhaps someone else can help.

It puts a right-click entry on the trash icon and the mycomputer icon.
You can save and restore your icon layouts.

WHAT this person was asking for is a reg backup. Not another endless
"utilty fix". sorry but your display card does not store your icon
settings. this must be stored somewhere in the windows system and it must
be recoverable. I cant' belive the lack of inight on the answers offered,
including links to "experts exchange" which bothers you with login nags to
veiw their priceless conversations.

simple answers for simple questions, perhaps?

So -- Answer the question, then, instead of whining on and on and on and on
