let you select a column of letters from an arbitrary line position?

for
example
like
you
can
do
in a
dos
window

From the above I'd like to be able to select, say, the second column of
letters leaving me with "oxioaonoi"

Jedit (and others) are far too bloated and resource hoggish for me. I found
a single, standalone, trim editor called Scintilla.exe of less than 300K
which
does precisely what you desire by use of the ALT key while dragging the
cursor. Do a Google search for Scintilla editor.
