I'm trying to make a presentation for a photo essay and I'd like to present
it so each slide looks like two pages of an open book.

Crystal Graphics has a book transition.

I think Glenna Shaw has a tutorial about how to do it yourself, but I can't
find it. Ah, wait, here it is:

Julie Terberg created a nice book that animates page turns. To get her
samples (which you can modify), go here
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/templates/CT103366151033.aspx and
download the "3D Shapes and Objects" file.

Oh, John Wilson has an add-in to do this, too:

Hali,

I created an open book (recto verso) but unfortunely I only have a Dutch
tutorial. To help you I made a webpage where you can download an example of
the open book for version 2003 and 2007. When you open the presentation in
your own English version of PowerPoint you will see how the book is composed
and which effects I have used to turn the pages.
Hope this is useful.

Kind regards,
