Is there a shortcut in powerpoint 2003 for inserting a picturebackground or a picture in an autoshap

Or if not a shortcut, a sneaky way to do it easier. BTW I have tried to creat a macro and that does not work.

Not really. I did do a very rough macro once. But now I working 2997, it is
so much easier.
