I have not used Kazaa before but I have heard horror stories of
trojans and various other bad things associated with it. Is there a
version that most or some would feel comfortable using?

No KaZaa site is reputable!

File (music) sharing is fraught with all the nasties and boogie men that
infect your nightmares.

If you must download files (music) then go to a reputable site after
researching thoroughly on Google.

There are several very good ones...but you have to use Linux to use them
:)

The very nature of peer to peer file sharing is inherently unsafe. It
doesn't matter what you are using it for.

Kazaa, and its competitors work by sharing the files on your PC with the
files on someone else's PC. Kazaa is merely the facilitator for this file
sharing. Anyone can load Kazaa on their machine, and you have no idea if
their PC is infected with viruses, spyware, etc.

Free music is not worth it to me!

Trojans, virii, etc. have nothing to do with Kazaa itself (or any other P2P
program). You get those via the files you download from other mostly
clueless people.

The only negative thing about Kazaa itself is that it installs spyware. You
can avoid that by using Kazaa Lite.

To make things complicated there are now 3: the original Kazaa, Kazaa Lite
++ ,and Kazaa Lite Resurrection. I read somewhere on the net ( can't
remember where) that the new version of K-lite ++ contains spyware. Don't
know if it's true, I'm using Resurrection which is spyware-free.

As long as you download .MP3 files only, there is nothing to fear (except
the RIAA.)
