Am running Win XP Home SP2 and have avoided downloading .Net
although MS Windows Update keeps pressing me to download .Net.

I have Office 2000 Professional. Have since aquired Word 2003
and FP 2003.

Am wondering if .Net would benefit me in web development. It
doesn't seem likely that FireFox, Netscape, and Opera would support
..Net

I would install it, because more and more applications are becoming .NET dependent
due to it's built in safety features.

Only if you are developing in Visual Studio .NET
It doesn't seem likely that FireFox, Netscape, and Opera would support
.Net

That's not really how .NET works. It's not a matter of those browser "supporting" .NET,
it's a matter of them having or not having features that depend upon .NET.

You would only need it under Home, if you have installed applications that require it. It is browser
independent, so all browsers can access sites developed with it.

Thank you. I'll install .Net although I foresee no need for it in
FP2003 development. It may
come in handy someday.

One reason to install the .NET Framework is because a growing number of
hardware vendors have used the DNF to build their control panels and other
desktop tools used to manage their hardware. The same is true of ISVs such
as Acronis whose True Image is a much better product than Symantec's Ghost.

Few customers who use Office 2003 applications understand what the Research
Task Pane can and is being used for. It is an amazing opportunity to bring
the web right to your desktop applications. The big picture is integration
and interoperability. Many ISVs and web developers are starting to figure
this stuff out as its been quite complex and the DNF is making it easier and
more efficient to make possible. There is a growing awareness of what
Microsoft's product development strategy is becoming and Microsoft made this
official just this week at the PDC.

Aside from other developments, there will be a Microsoft Office Server which
will be a development platform to enable us to use the DNF to integrate and
interoperate across the desktop. Office 12 and beyond will use XML as the
native file format. The future in this regard looks bright.

I installed Quick Books Pro 2005 a few weeks ago and it required .NET
framework to be installed.

You don't need .NET developers applications (E.G. visual studaio) if you
don't plan to use .NET on your web sites.

But if you check your compputer's installed programs you will probably
find that you have installed leardy dorem version of the .net framework.
Some Windows "programs" and services, and some non-MS programs on your
computer may require or need it.
