Is there a freeware similar to Mathematica?

I'm not sure what Mathematica does. If it is an equation editor here
are some you might check out:

single page handout type documents and web graphics that include
math/chemical equations simple vector graphics and pictures.

I can't find the one I was hinking of. Maybe Cousin Stanley will see
the thread and recall the name. There are many more hits googling
"equation editor freeware".

The version that I have is the $$$_Ware version,
provided free by the author for finding a bug
in the free version ....

Off-hand I don't remember the differences
in the $$$_Ware version and Free Equation Illustrator
but it's probably discussed at the site ....

Mathematica is not really an "equation editor", it's more a
software package for performing symbolic mathematics.

Some open source initiatives that the OP might want to take a look
at:

Maxima
http://maxima.sourceforge.net/

Octave
http://www.octave.org/

Scilab
http://www-rocq.inria.fr/scilab/

The last 2 are more oriented towards numerical computation, so
they're more of a Matlab equivalent than a Mathematica equivalent.

I don't have any significant personal experience with these
packages, so give them a shot and let us know how they work out!

Wald

If you are looking for something similar to Maxima (i.e. a symbolic math
evaluator), there are also the following FREE programs:

1. YACAS -- see http://yacas.sourceforge.net/
2. AXIOM -- See http://savannah.nongnu.org/projects/axiom
