Twice I've tried to install SP4 and each time it stops
with error message(s) regarding inability to copy certain
files. If I opt to skip those files, then my system
becomes very unstable. If I opt to halt the upgrade, i get
the same result after and wind up reinstalling W2k.

Has anyone else experienced this problem? If so, how did
you handle it?

I suspect a bug in SP4.

How are you installing Service pack 4? Is it express install
(SP4express_...) or network install (w2ksp4_...) :

What's the error message? Which file does SP4 complain about?
Are you running any real-time virus checker?

Rajesh:

Thanks for your reply. I used SP4 Express Install. The
error message that halted the install was "could not copy
<filename>"

Anyway, I will just avoid SP4 for a month or so and see if
any fixes might be forthcoming.

Thanks

Martin

Yes Martin there is a bug in w2k sp4 (see microsoft
knowledge base article- 822831). Ms mentions a fix which I
am still trying to find. Anyone out there know the
location? Al

I tried both the express install and the network install.
Same result.

Now, after reinstalling W2K Pro from the SP4 crash, I'm
trying to reinstall SP3 and now that's screwed up, too.
Using both express and network install for SP3 I get the
error message "file is corrupt."

That probably means there are vestiges of both SP4 and the
old installation of SP3 on my disk somewhere. I've
searched the registry and deleted anything pertaining to
SP3 but so far that hasn't helped.
