CD-R is permanent. Once done, you can't change, but the info on them is
still good.
CD-RW is "re-writable. You can erase, add, etc.
As far as how many CD's it took. Most CD-R's are 700 MB & CD-RW's are 650
MB. Not a big difference.
To re-download them, either do what you did but use CD-RW's, or, if you can
copy, copy the CD-R's to CD-RW's.

Hope this was helpful. Question was a little fuzzy to me.

Original question was a little fuzzy to me too, but few comments
-it is possible to write on a cd-r more than once, but you can not remove the data
(however you may replace the table of contents of the cd)
-CD-R's are available at least 650Mb (74min), 700Mb (80min), 800Mb (90min) and ~890Mb
(I can't remember the exact size of that 99mins version)
-CD-RW's are available at least 650Mb and 700Mb
-CD-RW can be used as normal CD, then erased, and used again or
it can be formatted into a UDF format and used as "hard-drive"
(renaming, moving... files is possible, but the available size is less than Normal CD-format)
-You may not be able to listen audio on CD-RW with normal CD-player
