Is the motherboard failing

If I do a cold boot of my computer the bios does not recogonize the IDE
channel the hard drives are on. This results in the message that no
operating system is found. I have to shut it down and restart a couple of
times before the bios reconizes the hard drives.
Once the computer boots up everything is fine. This only happens on cold
boot up it does not happen on a hot restart.
Any ideas as to what the problem would be? Is a chipset failing?

Could very well be that the drive is not spinning up fast enough. Place the
drive on the other IDE channel to see if it will boot from there. Try a
"known good" drive. Does the drive get recognized - even if it will not
boot? You have the computer, we don't. You will have to try various things
to try to identify the cause of the problem. It's mostly common sense. But,
as it only happens cold, I would suspect the drive.

Have you checked the motherboard battery - it's possible this battery has
gone dead and the BIOS is having to redetect all the hardware again. Are
you having to reset the time each time you cold boot? If so, this would be
another indication the motherboard battery is dead.
