are the files in the windows dir like $ntuninstallq327979
$ safe to delete? I think they relate to the security
installs but are they safe to delete

How can we possibly know that when we only know one file name" From the
description of the original, it is likely that the files are for the
hotfixes you see listed in Add/Remove programs in Control Panel and those
are the updates from Windows update. If you wish to remove them, use
Add/Remove don't just delete files.

Best advice, if you don't know what it is, don't delete it.

Hi Frank,

The $NtUninstallQxxxxxx$ folders (these are compressed and are usually blue)
contain the information necessary to uninstall each hotfix you installed
from Windows Update. It is only necessary to keep them if you want to retain
the option to uninstall a hotfix. You may delete them otherwise, but I would
suggest you retain them for a short time after you update, just to ensure
there are no problems with any given update.

When finished, go to Add & Remove, select a hotfix for removal. You will get
an error message followed by a prompt to remove it from the listings.

MVP Doug Knox also has written a utility to automate this process if you are
interested, see:
