I have a customer telling me that the latest version of "equation editor"
(with word 2003) is not backward compatible with older versions. Is that
correct?

The Equation Editor file format may have changed between Word for Windows 95
and Word 97. It has not been changed since AFAIK. If someone is getting an
error message trying to edit equations, it may be because Equation Editor is
not installed (it isn't by default, in the Typical install) or because of
interference from the Office Plug-in in Norton AntiVirus.

Suzanne's correct; the equations produced by the Equation Editor included in
Office 2003 hasn't changed from previous recent versions.
