Is SP3 Good to go yet? With Intel Processors? Its the only thing in my

lucky for me i was able to use the repair console but had to do a lot of
re-installs for all my programs.

To put it bluntly...

It has been 'good to go' since it was released to manufacturing months ago.
If your machine has issues with it - something needs to be checked/fixed on
*your* machine.

I have installed it onto a large number of machines - likely approaching or
exceeding the thousand mark by now. These machines differ in hardware
configuration as well as software configuration in-as-much as one could
expect - which would be a great deal. As of yet - I have not experienced
but one or two with 'issues' - and those were specific (obviously) to the
machines and I was able to get around those issues quickly and finish the
installation without lasting consequence.

That is not to say there are not known common issues amongsts machines -
there are - but it varies per user/hardware configuration/software
configuration/machine history/etc. The list below should allow you to check
your machine for these, clean it up and prepare for SP3. If you *want* to
say that you should not have to prepare for an update - the fact is that
much of what you do to prepare is stuff you probably should have been doing
all along (backups, cleaning the machine of spyware/adware/malware,
defragmentation, chkdsk, updating other applications and hardware drivers,
etc...)

Beyond that - some simple maintenance might be needed - like installing the

be best to double check
with intel to ensure your
chipset is sp3 compatible.

however, if your system is
functional, with sp2 then
why temp fate because sp3
is not 100% compatible.

the question here is if you
are ready to take a chance
and spend much time in
experimenting with sp3 or
simply leave well enough
alone.

Thank You for the info The links you provided helped alot.
Some of the things i had to do is go into task manager and totally turn off
anti virus AVG and Avast just turning them off did not stop some of the
process running in the background. I also un installed IE7 updates and IE7
itself. Also shut down my firewall. After I installed SP3 and re booted I
went back to windows update and there were a few more updates to do. All in
all took about 1hr 15min

Thanks

The great majority of XP users have had no problems with it. I've had
no problems with any of the machines I've installed it on.

Last time i installed it my pc crashed to a black screen
lucky for me i was able to use the repair console but had to do a lot of
re-installs for all my programs.

Did you read here and follow its advice before installing it:

3 for Windows XP OR IS IT NOTHING BUT PRINTED WORDS ? If it IS an actual
Program, WHERE CAN I DOWNLOAD THE REAL DEAL ???
I don't know about you, but every time I go to Windows Update, the very
first thing that comes up is the chance to download and install SP3 or to
get the CD.
It is in fact hard to miss this chance to install SP3.

I posted a direct link to download the ISO image (ro make an installable CD
version of SP3 for Windows XP) and a direct link to download the IT package
for SP3 for Windows XP - and you cannot find it? (And you responded to the
very message I posted those links to the downloadable files on.)

So, to be blunt - you really should read *and* comprehend what is posted
before you start getting upset about things in the future. ;-)

Let me try this again...
(*HINT* - look at the second and third web page address links following
these words.)

Key things to note:

Internet Explorer:
"If you have installed Windows Internet Explorer® 7 or a beta version of
Internet Explorer 8, and then install Windows XP SP3, you cannot uninstall
Internet Explorer. To avoid this, ensure Internet Explorer 7 or a beta
version of Internet Explorer 8 is not installed before installing Windows XP
SP3. If you have already encountered this issue, uninstall Windows XP SP3,
uninstall Internet Explorer, and then reinstall Windows XP SP3."

Windows XP Media Center Edition 2002:
"If you install Windows XP SP3 on a computer running Windows XP Media Center
Edition 2002 with SP1, Windows XP Media Center Edition may malfunction. To
avoid this, install Windows XP SP2 before you install Windows XP SP3. If
this issue has already occurred, uninstall Windows XP SP3, install Windows
XP SP2, and then reinstall Windows XP SP3."

It seems some people are unable to get further updates after installing
SP3... Seems some have experienced a symptom similar to doing a repair
installation on Windows XP - and the same fix seems to work for them for
that...

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP

Some people experience an "endless reboot" issue...

[NB: The above has been updated many times and now includes "a small tool
that will detect the IntelPPM problem and mitigate it before installing
[WinXP SP3]."

1. Boot into Safe Mode and rename INTELPMM.SYS to INTELPMM.OLD.
2. After booting into Safe Mode:
Start --> Run --> (copy/paste)
sc config intelppm start= disabled
--> OK --> Reboot into normal (Windows) mode.

Beyond that - some simple maintenance might be needed - like installing the
latest hardware drivers from your hardware vendors...

Also - if you visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and do a custom scan
for updates, when it is done and if you do not already have SP3 (and you
have a version of Windows XP that SP3 was made for) - it should offer it to
you *or* you can choose to install OTHER updates.
