Hello,

Is there anybody out there trying the "smartfocus" function of HP?
"Smartfocus" was announced to be a success among the Real Life
technology that HP includes in new modern digital cameras and inkjet
printers. I am trying this function in my HP photosmart 8250. Before
testing, I guessed Smartfocus is to automatically correct out of focus
images. However the smartfocus of my printer seems not to work that
way. It cannot correct any out of focus image. Moreover in the manual,
HP just says that Smartfocus is to create high-resolution images by
sharpening low resolution files. And actually, it does. It indeed
increases resolution for some images. But "deconvolution" can also
increase the resolution by refocusing (or sharpening) the image. Now I

am getting confused if Smartfocus of HP is the function to correct out
of focus images. If so, it seems that this function of HP doesn't work
very well. Can you please clarify my confusion?

Thanks

I guessed Smartfocus is to automatically correct out of focus images.

It would be nice if that were so but I'm afraid it isn't. If you had sufficient information (in mathematical format) about the original scene it would be possible to correct programmatically the focus of an out of focus image but if all you have is the out of focus image then you don't have the information you need.

Jon.
