is Outlook reliable?

I have never used Outlook and I don't know what version I have (I am
at the office, now). I use W98 SE, IE/Outlook Express 6, Office 97.

I have had all kinds of problems with OE6 and I was advised to use
Outlook since it's more stable and it does more (I don't need more).
Is this correct?

I am thinking of switching to Outlook since I should be able to
retrieve my mail messages, identities, etc.. Anything I should know?

Thanks in advance - Giovanni

I wouldn't switch from Outlook Express 6.0 to Outlook 97, which is what you
have.

Reliable? Well, Outlook 97 is quite old at this point, is unsupported, and
was buggy at release (MS released OL98 as a free upgrade for that reason,
for a while).

It really depends what you need. OL has a calendar, tasks, journal, etc...OE
can handle only mail and news.

If you're having problems with OE, it may not be OE itself but something
wrong with your operating system.... I doubt OL97 would be a useful
'upgrade' for you if all you need is mail and news anyway...perhaps best to
figure out what's wrong with your OE first and see if it can be resolved
before taking the plunge to Outlook anyway, regardless of version.

I'd post details about the OE problems in a group for Outlook Express....

Also note that a good website for information on OE is:

Outlook 97 comes with Office 97 and you upgrade to Outlook 98 by installing SP1 for Office 97.

Not sure what you mean by "problems" with Outlook Express 6. Likely a result of Cumulative updates to IE 6 throughout 2003. You might be able to fix OEX issues by removing IE 6 and reinstalling it.

Finally Outlook 98 is a sitting duck for every type of virus out there as well as VBS files. If you choose to go with Outlook 98 then just remember to never open a email. Find some other way to view the e-mails. PocketKnife Peek is good for that.

Actually, Outlook 98 was a separate download, free for a while, but no
longer available. (Office 97 SP1 was Outlook 8.01, I think. SP2 was
definitely 8.03.)

My apologies. I guess my memory isn't as good as I thought it was. I seem to recall installing SP1 and coming away with Outlook 98. That must mean I have Outlook 98 somewhere around here. I just remember not installing SP1 at the time at work because I didn't want to end up with a different Outlook version then the rest of the company so I guess that concern was unfounded.

Um, no. Outlook 98 is a not the same as Outlook 97 SP1 or SP2, as far as I
can tell.

Been there done that. My impression was that when I installed SP1 for Microsoft Office 97 my Outlook 97 was upgraded to Outlook 98. I guess I was wrong. Time has a way playing tricks. I never said they were the same.
