Is Outlook 2003 really THAT good at filtering spam/virus messages?

I am thinking about upgrading to Office 2003, and I heard people discuss the
wonderful features of the new Outlook allowing to stop 95% of spam. Is that
spam filter really effective?

Yes, I find it works extemely well. The sensitivity level can be adjusted up
or down, too.

Can it prevent virus-infected messages from downloading to my machine?

Nope. One still needs to use an AV program! I use AVG and it works fine with
Outlook2003.
Although there is a feature in which you can download headers *only* from a
POP mailbox, then mark them for deletion (on the server), full download,
etc.
