Is or isn't Avast free?

I had been running it for quite a long time when it started popping up a
red tinted box that said something about expiration or words to that
effect. Shortly after those messages started appearing, I had to do a
systems restore on my computer for unrelated reasons and lost the
program so I downloaded it again. The new download started with a 59
day count on it which is now down to 57 days. What's going on?

An Avast license key is only good for 12 months. You will have to get
another from Avast. It is still freeware for home users. I don't think it
would have anything to do with you having to do a restore.

If you don't use your PC for commercial purposes Avast! is completly free,
but you do have to get a registry key.
When you start Avast you should see a splash screen. There should be a
button in it to get a registry key.

You just have to get a new registration key each year.

That's the main reason I dumped Avast and decided to stick with
AVG. No yearly registration bullshit with AVG. Plus, I found Avast
intrusive.
