This is off topic for uk.adverts.computer - don't know why you posted
here. Or is this a troll? (seeing your posting name)

OT in uk.adverts.computer. Try uk.comp.homebuilt.

I'd say it's the RAM or CPU. If not one of those two, motherboard.

Try replacing the PSU. I know you sid it is working, but i've
seen machines light up etc, but the PSU was still defective (if
you have another box, try swapping them over to try it.)

no troll - just desperate for help a.s.a.p. Hey I'd even ask George W Bush
if I thought that he knew anything about computers!!

o.k. tried psu from my box and nowt happened in the lad's box except that
the keyboard lights came on
put ram from his Linux box into his system = no joy
put his 512MB stick ram into the Linux box and bios booted as a.o.k.

So methinks that the psu is o.k.
Ram is o.k.
monitor is o.k. as now booting/showing Linux from that system
His gfx card works in my system
keyboard and mouse work with Linus
The keyboard lights DID come on when the bl**dy Windoze system was switched
on as did the HDD lights and the CDRom light.

so... is it the cpu then?
Its an AMD Athlon 2000+, socket A with a Jetway mobo.

sorry Bob - I'll leave you all in peace. I prefer Bob to Robert anyway
because of the obvious reason you suggested. Some parents haven't any sense
when naming their children. I always think that I am lucky - I could have
been a boy called Sue.

Remove all power (unplug from wall) to the pc, clear the cmos - follow the
manual, reboot. Sounds like possible bios corruption to me.

I used to work for a woman named Robin. She married a guy with the last
name of "Banks"...Now her name is Robin Banks....it's a name, and an
occupation... :)

Just because you get lights and fans doesn't mean the PSU is working. I've
seen many bad ones that would look normal with lights and all. So, not
knowing anything about this PC, I'd say check the PSU.

Thanks everyone for ideas and support - didn't want to pay PCWorld the £50
quoted for fitting a new CPU. So went to a proper computer shop who swapped
out the Athlon and it still didn't work. They diagnosed 2 problems
1) poss mobo dead for some unknown reason
2) it was 2 mins to 5 by then and they were closing
so went to Maplins and got a cheap £35 mobo which accepted the Athlon and
old 512Mb SDram that was on the old one and so 75 mins later we have a
working system and I have a cut thumb from the new plate for the ports when
I tried to remove the old one.
The lad is happy and can do his revision for his exams and his homework .
once again, many thanks.

Jetway mobo? There's your problem.

Hah! Should have read further before my comment about the Jetway being
the problem. I simply refuse to use them, and if I get a PC to repair
that has a Jetway mobo I know where to look straight away. I'm seldom
wrong too.

Well, wish me luck, I'm using a Jetway S755MAX for my Athlon 64 system.
Great features. Hope it last a while.
