Is my Messenger fully dead?

Brian B.

I have disabled my Messenger service as described in an
post (thanks Jonathan Kay).

My question is this:

Is it possible for another program to start Messenger
even after I have turned it off?

(I read here that this is true for Windows Messenger -
I'm going to post another question of how to kill that
for good)

Greetings Brian,

Assuming it just "tries" to start the Messenger Service, no, Windows won't allow it.
However, another application could make the configuration changes to make it active again and
then obviously, it could start it.

I haven't seen any applications do this however.

Take note this is for the Messenger Service, *not* Windows Messenger. I realize you
understand the difference, but this is clear confusion if this post comes up on a search in
the future.

Jonathan,
Thanks, exactly what I wanted to know.

I went to you web site also read how to uninstall Windows
Messenger.

A trick I sometimes use, rather than uninstalling, is to
rename the executable. That way if I ever want to decide
to run it I can do a quick rename back & run it.

Is the msmsgs.exe for Window Messenger?
If I do my rename trick is that going to totally kill it
and keep other programs (like Outlook) from opening it?
