Is my 9700 AIW going bad?

Hopefully someone can help me. I noticed this weekend playing Company of
Heroes that the graphics started to distort with large triangles appearing
and basically blurring out the main image. When I would exit the app to the
desktop there were several columns of rainbow looking images. Then if I did
a screen refresh it went away. It tends to happen mostly with 3D
applications. I uninstalled and reinstalled the latest ATI drivers, but it
still is doing it. It also seems to be getting worse instead of better.
I've run anti-virus scans, and defragged the hard disk as well. So my
question is whether the card is going bad or not? Any ideas?

thanks in advance.

Maybe going bad (due to board components degrading) or maybe it's
overheating due to a clogged fan, dried thermal paste, etc. Does the card
use thermal paste like 9800 and later cards do, or does it have a thermal
pad?

Maybe overheating. Anyway if you can spare $100, get an X850Pro AGP (< $100)
and you can enjoy CoH in its full glory. Before building a C2D system, I
played Company of Heroes on a 23" WS monitor driven by an X850 Pro with a
high graphic setting. The game hardly slowed down at all.

If you haven't looked at or touched the fan in the past couple of years, I
almost guarantee you the card is overheating. It may be time to look to a
third-party replacement fan, or as another poster suggested, a whole new
card (since you do seem to play games).

You can use ATITool to slightly under clock your GPU to get a few more years
out of your card.

You have described excatcly what happened to mine last week.......I
cleaned fan dust etc....same result.

Bought a NVidia 7600GS ......................problem fixed. It was the
card. Now I have a piece of junk card. I hate ATI and their lousy
drivers.
