Is MSDE free for SDK users?

It's free period, per the license agreement.

Yes, it is, just don't say it's SQL Server with X amount
of licenses or you wrote it.

I disagree strongly. How about the new Yukon file system, will it be
distributed with MSDE, i.e. how will it run on Windows 98 for instance? Not
a simple task if you ask me. I hope MSDE will continue as it is so much
better than JET, but it remains to be seen.

While I know I'll probably start a flame war over this,
MS is very very good about supporting exisiting technology
for it's developers. There's a ton of code in VS that's
all about providing old functionality so developers don't
get hit in the face with a lot of cold water.

No doubt Access is not growing, but I can't imagine it
being phased out in the next five years. It's included in
Office 2003, so it may be longer than that. As far as
Yukon, I have to agree with Carsten (and that's not just
because his book helped me learn ADO.NET). To say MSDE is
just SQL Server with a size limitation is a bit of an
oversimplification and the existing differences will
certainly grow larger with Yukon.

Another reason why I don't think Access is going to
be 'replaced' by MSDE, unless it's a long time away, is
that Anyone can install and use Access right out of the
box. They can generate forms and reports adn they don't
have to be developers to do it. They can also record
Macros which many people do. Sure, you can use Crystal
Reports, C# and the like to get you there....but that
takes a lot more knowledge and there are a lot of people
that aren't that committed to learning it because they
don't need to.

I worked somewhere recently where a terrible access
database was kept in place just because so many reports
were run off of it and no one wanted to re-write them in
CR b/c they didn't want to have to learn crystal....
that's not the best reason, I agree, but it not untypical
of the way many people feel.

Just my two cents,

Cheers,

Bill

Ah no. Access is not going anywhere and MSDE will never replace it--because
MSDE is a version of SQL Server, not a UI-rich application development tool.
Access is designed to help create data-centric applications and defaults to
using the JET database engine. Eventually, I expect JET to no longer be the
default DBMS engine for Access--MSDE (in one form or another) will replace
it.
As far as Yukon, MS is not ready to talk about how MSDE will be implemented,
but they have made it very clear (publicly) that MSDE is here to stay. While
it might change in form or how it's licensed/exposed, I think MS will
continue to have a low-cost/free DBMS engine to deploy with small
applications.
